In 1963, the 230SL had the difficult task of replacing two legendary models simultaneously: the 190 SL and the 300 SL. When compared to its predecessors the 230SL is closer to the 190SL in its price and design. With the only similarities to the larger 300SL being the six-cylinder engine and headlight design. The designers gave a special form to the removable hardtop that was based around safety issues and ease of access to the vehicle. The shape of the roof resulted in the model (230 SL, 250 SL and 280 SL) being nicknamed 'Pagoda'. This photo shows the result of the restoration of a 250 SL with "full extras". As always, we would like to show you some photos of the restoration process. We hope you enjoy the show.

In the German car-industry jargon of the time the name "Erlkönig" was used for cars that were developed in secret and that were usually tested at night.
(The word "Erlkönig" originally comes from the poem by Goethe [Who rides, so late, through night and wind?...]. According to the trade literature the very first Erlkönig of the time was the already very much anticipated prototype of the Mercedes-Benz Type 180.With this model Daimler-Benz also shifted to the "Ponton" body style. This new body provided more space inside, it offered lower wind resistance and it also had a self-carrying construction method as well. The name Ponton refers to the fact that the chassis of these cars is similar to the pontoon bridges used by the military.
Please take a look at the presentation of the 180 Db, which is a further developed version of the 180.

It is truly a fantastic car and at its peak it was the vehicle of choice for the ladies of the high society. It is no secret, nor is it a problem that under the bodywork of the 190SL runs a more modest engine than its bigger brother the 300SL. The 190SL four-cylinder engine does not stop it from standing out from the shadow of the 300SL, it may be less sporty but that does not take away from its charm and reliability. If one examines the 190SL more closely it is clear that this car actually paved the way for the future "SL" models of Mercedes-Benz.

At the Frankfurt car show of 1951 the largest cars were typically the focus of attention. The audience primarily crowded around the new Mercedes 300. Many people thought that this German mass-produced car that was considered to be the largest and fastest at that time, would be the 1950s successor of the former 'Great Mercedes'. The Type 300 in its day was greatly respected - more so than, for example, the later Mercedes 600. The entire German industry was justly proud of the car. Its popularity was significantly increased by the fact that Mr. Konrad Adenauer, federation chancellor at the time, always travelled in one. Adenauer (on top of his other virtues) entered history as the most famous Mercedes 300 owner. This is why the car - which was long ago considered a classic - became known as an 'Adenauer'.
